Palliative care is a specialized form of medical care designed to provide relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness, with the primary goal of improving quality of life for both the patient and their family. Unlike curative treatment, which aims to cure or treat the disease, palliative care focuses on managing symptoms such as pain, depression, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, and anxiety to enhance comfort. It can be provided alongside curative treatment at any stage of a serious illness and is not limited to end-of-life scenarios. Palliative care teams are typically interdisciplinary, including doctors, nurses, social workers, and other specialists who work together with a patient’s other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. Effective communication, care coordination, access to community resources, and support for families are integral components of this approach. By addressing the full spectrum of physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs, palliative care helps patients and families navigate complex healthcare pathways and make more informed decisions about their care.
